SUMMER FIREFLIES

'SUMMER FIREFLIES'
Oil 6 x 8

Day 38

A little bit of summer whimsy. The fireflies
have been magnificent this year, and I've been
watching them since they first appeared at the
beginning of June. From those observations, I just
sat down and painted what I remembered seeing.
What do you think?

'Shrek'
Oil 4 x 4

Day 37

I couldn't resist...this is the lime-green ogre of my
tomato garden - an heirloom tomato named 'Green Zebra'.
As with the 'Mortgage Lifter' heirloom tomato in my
previous post for this challenge, this little guy
will become part of a delicious salad for dinner
tonight.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT

Although I am still painting today, I thought I would
post something a little bit different. We were driving
around up in the mountains this weekend, and suddenly
came upon this beautiful doe. The deer have such a
gorgeous red color this time of year, and it is only accented
by all of the green foliage.
If you look closely (and to the right of the photo),
you will see that she is not alone. I consider it such a
gift that we were able to see this, and that is why I want
to share it with you.

HEIRLOOM

Oil 6 x 8

Day 36

I was so happy to find this beautiful, ripe heirloom tomato
when I went out to the vegetable garden this morning.
This particular variety is called 'Mortgage Lifter', and
is up there as one of my favorites. It reminds me so much
of the tomatoes my mom grew when I was a child.

It was very difficult not to slice it up and have it for
lunch today, but since I was painting from life I had
to exert a little patience. Tonight this tomato is going
to be the star at our supper table!

FOURTH OF JULY SAIL
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Fourth of July Sail'
Oil 12 x 16

Another painting from my trip down to North Carolina
this past fourth of July. We were waiting for the water
ferry to return us from Shackleford Island back to
Beaufort when I spotted this sailboat cruising between
the islands. I really enjoyed seeing the American flag waving
so proudly from the back of the sailboat.
(Note: Those seagulls in my previous post 'Gull Talk' were
directly to my right!)

Day 35

These little beauties came from my daughter's
garden. I am still waiting for my tomatoes to
ripen - there are lots of them, they're just all
green yet. This year I decided to grow a good many
heirloom tomatoes, so I am hoping that they
start to turn color soon.

HEADING HOME
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Heading Home'
Oil 9 x 12

On the last night of our visit with our family in North
Carolina, I was sitting on the dock at my cousin's house
watching the play of color on the water and coastline
as the sun started to set.
I had my camera, and was hoping to capture some of
this amazing color when this little boat chugged in and
caught the last bright rays of the sun. As soon as I
saw the light hit the boat, I knew this was going to be
something I would want to paint.

BLACK-EYED SUSAN

'Black-Eyed Susan'
Oil 4 x 4

Day 34

Another summer garden standard - the
black-eyed susan. It's always a surprize to
see where they are going to pop up because
they re-seed themselves so freely each year.
My grandson has loved these flowers
since he was very little, so I have a feeling
this one is going to be confiscated.

SOLD
GULL TALK
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Gull Talk'
Oil 6 x 8

My husband and I were in Beaufort, North Carolina
over the fourth of July weekend to visit family, and
while we were there we took a water ferry over to
Shackleford Island. I spotted these gulls at the
edge of the water, and it looked like they were
having a nice chat and totally enjoying the view.

COMPLEMENTS

'Complements'
Oil 4 x 4

Day 33

Since I am currently inundated with zucchinis and
summer squash, I decided to do a close-up of the
beautifully curved neck of this yellow summer squash.
I was fascinated by the stem end, which in itself
reminded me of a miniature yellow pumpkin.
(I love the way the purple makes the yellows
come forward - hence the title!)

WHITE CONEFLOWER

'White Coneflower'
Oil 6 x 8

Day 32

These flowers are from my daughter's garden.
I liked the abstract qualities of the foliage
behind the flowers, and tried to keep that in
the painting - what do you think?

ACADIA CLIFFS
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Acadia Cliffs'
Oil 11 x 14

Just finished up this painting that will be a
series of paintings I have done of Maine.
This will be one of the paintings that will be
on display when I am a featured artist at
Gallerie 13 in September 2010.

TIME FOR LUNCH
by Claire Beadon Carnell
100 Paintings in 100 Days Challenge
'Inspirations from a Back Yard'

'Time for Lunch'
Oil 5 x 7
31/100

Day 31

This bumblebee is headed straight for
a luncheon buffet at the purple coneflower
cafe! This flower (aka echinacea) draws so
many butterflies, bees and other insects
when it is at its peak. When
it starts to dry out in the fall, then
the birds flock in for the seeds it produces.
It's always a nice plant to have in the garden!

BITS OF SUMMER
by Claire Beadon Carnell
100 Paintings in 100 Days Challenge
'Inspirations from a Back Yard'
30/100

'Bits of Summer'
Oil 6 x 8
30/100

Day 30

Even with the intense heat and lack of rain we have
had here on the East Coast this past few weeks,
there are some flowers that just shine in the garden
this time of Summer. The purple coneflower, zinnias,
black-eyed susans and butterfly bush all manage
to make their way into a vase at my house so that
I can enjoy them inside as well as out!

LAVENDER BLUE

'Inspirations from a Back Yard'
29/100

'Lavender Blue'
Oil 5 x 7
29/100

Day 29

One of the prettiest scents in my garden,
I can never just walk by the lavender without
touching the flowers to get that scent on my
hands. Lavender was always present in the
gardens of my mother and my grandmother, so
the tradition lives on.

SUNFLOWERS

'Sunflowers'
Oil 6 x 6
28/100

Day 28

I think that it is funny that every time
I go to paint sunflowers, I want to paint
looser. It's definitely something about the
flower itself, but I also believe that Vincent
Van Gogh has some influence in there as well.

'Radishes'
Oil 5 x 7

Day 27

Some radishes from the garden. I think
it's pretty neat to walk out into my
veggie garden and pick many of the components
for our meals. No poison, no chemicals of any
kind - just fresh, wholesome food. Yum.

GETTYSBURG FESTIVAL 2010
ARTIST COLONY
Paintings from the Artist Colony Experience

I can not even begin to describe the incredible experience
of being a participant at the first Gettysburg Festival Artist Colony
last week.
How amazing to be able to completely dedicate three whole days
to my craft, study with Master Painter Lisa Egeli, explore
Gettysburg looking for the perfect painting spot - and then
be treated to gourmet meals and air conditioned buses
that transported us to and from our painting events.
A dream come true, and many thanks to everyone associated
with the Gettysburg Festival who made all of this possible.

Here are two of the plein air paintings that I painted during
the Artist Colony.

Garden Angel
100 Paintings in 100 Days Challenge
'Inspirations from a Back Yard'

'Garden Angel'
Oil 5 x 7
26/100

Day 26

This little angel has presided over my garden
for years. She's lost some paint, and also
part of one arm, but that doesn't keep her
from watching over the purple clematis that
climbs up the corner of my gardening shed.
