'Fields of Tranquility'

This is a painting I would call mostly plein air and part

'plein air-conditioned'. I went back to Gettysburg the other

day to paint again in the area around Plum Run and the Trostle

Farm and got much of this painting blocked in when some

not so 'tranquil' clouds started to move in. I decided to

pack up my gear while the weather was still friendly, and

headed home to my studio and finished the painting while

the visuals of the area were still very prominent in my
mind and the paint was still wet.

As with all areas of the Gettysburg Battlefield, the reality of

today is so dramatically different from those early

days in July 1863. It is such a peaceful, almost reverent

place now, and my hope is that this painting honors
those who perished here.

RECEPTION - JUNE 19, 2011

Gettysburg Fringe Festival Plein Air Event

Yesterday we had the reception that concluded the

2011 Gettysburg Fringe Festival Plein Air Event. Paintings

that the artists had done over the past ten days were

displayed at the Historic Train Station in Gettysburg, PA.

It was a great time - and very nice to meet with the public (and not

be covered in sunscreen, bug spray and paint when we

met some of them out on the battlefield while we were painting!)
It was also a terrific time to get together with all of the

participating artists and talk about our adventures out in

the field.

Thanks to everyone who made all of this possible!

DAY EIGHT GETTYSBURG FRINGE FESTIVAL

DAY EIGHT - JUNE 17, 2011

Gettysburg Fringe Festival Plein Air Event

When I left my house this morning, the sky was gloomy and there

was an occasional sprinkle on my windshield. I was

tempted to turn around and head back home, but knowing

this was my last day to paint in this plein air event I decided

to keep on heading toward Gettysburg. I am so glad I did -

as I got closer to the battlefield the skies cleared. I

drove around and found these white barns at the intersection

of the Wheatfield Road and Crawford Road, and within

sight of Little Round Top, Big Round Top and Devil's Den.

This has been so much fun! I am a bit sad that it is ending.

got a bit brisk several times, and I was hanging on to my

umbrella and brushes for dear life!

DAY SEVEN GETTYSBURG FRINGE FESTIVAL

Today I was sheduled to paint at the Eisenhower Farm, but

unfortunately I was not able to go there because of the rain.

Hopefully I will be able to get out to paint tomorrow.

DAY SIX - JUNE 15, 2011

Gettysburg Fringe Festival Plein Air Event

Today I painted at Plum Run, which runs right through the

center of the Gettysburg Battlefield. This tiny stream, also

known as 'Bloody Run', once ran red with the blood of

Union and Confederate soldiers. The mountain in the background

is Big Round Top, and Little Round Top (not seen here)

is directly to the left.

It was another beautiful day to paint, and we had lots of

passersby - all either walking, running, bicycling, riding horseback

and even a group riding segweys. Here's my painting from today:

Peaceful Day at Plum Run

As we were walking around trying to settle on where we would

paint, we came across this great vista. I was really attracted to the

diagonals of the rolling fields, that great old oak tree, and the

wildflowers in the foreground - quite a different place

from what it was those three days in July almost 150 years ago.

Linda Young and I had quite an enjoyable day painting

side by side - it is always so much fun to see the different

interpretations when artists paint the same subject!

DAY FIVE - JUNE 14, 2011

Gettysburg Fringe Festival Plein Air Event

Another day of gorgeous weather to paint on the Gettysburg

Battlefield. Most of us chose to paint at the famous

'Devil's Den', an area of massive rocks that was the sight

of intense fighting and loss during the battle. I was walking

around looking at the different configurations of rock - there are

so many possiblities there for interesting paintings. Then I

turned around, and with my back to the Devil's Den I saw

this valley of stone and flowers and lush late

Spring greens. Here's my painting from today:

I only had a minute when I got home to photograph this, so I

apologize for the glare. I may take a look at this tomorrow

and clean up some edges and add some brighter brights,

but overall I was very happy with today's work..

While I was painting this, Amy Lindenberger

came over to me and asked if I knew what I was painting. I

thought, well of course - this is a really nice area of rock, delicate

Queen Anne's lace, honeysuckle and a great variety of greens.

Then she proceeded to tell me that the area I chose for my

painting is called the Slaughter Pen, in reference to the great

number of Confederate soldiers killed there. The rocks that are

in place today are almost exactly as they were during those

three days of fighting in 1863. The memories they must hold...

DAY FOUR - JUNE 13, 2011

Gettysburg Fringe Festival Plein Air Event

Today I had planned to paint at the Peach Orchard. On

my way I passed a field that overlooks the back side

of the Slyder Farm and since it looked so gorgeous bathed

in the morning light, I decided to stop right there. This is a

field on the Gettysburg Battlefield that I have painted before

(my painting "Hallowed Fields"), and have plans to paint again.

The whole battlefield is a very sacred place, but this location

is one that draws me every time for its solemn beauty. It is difficult

to reconcile the horrible loss of life that took place here with

the peaceful scenery that exists today.

I was alone (except for a few tourists), and the morning was

one of such clear, cool light - let's just say that I was in my

space of complete happiness...

I started and finished this painting entirely in the field today.

I will put it aside for few days and look at it with fresh eyes to

see if anything needs to be tweaked, but for now I am really

happy with the day's work. The little buildings in the background

are the house and barn of the Slyder Farm.

WATCHFUL

'Watchful'

I painted this plein air painting in support of the CALC and PASA

fundraiser that was held last night at the Dickinson College

Farm. I had been out earlier in the week to start my

painting, and then last night went to the farm early to finish

it for the event. Much to my surprise, the red wagon that

the sheep congregated around to get some shade was

gone (it was being used to transport guests around the farm - just

like an old fashioned hay ride)! The sheep and their lambs

are really beautiful...I have so many photographs, and will

probably go out there to get some more!

My congratulations to everyone at CALC and Dickinson

College Farm for making it such a wonderful event,

for an incredible cause!!!

UPDATE - COMPLETED PAINTING

I completed this last night, and think I got the colors

pretty close to what I experienced on site. Sure hope to

go back there again - it is a plein air painter's dream.

DAY THREE - JUNE 12, 2011

Gettysburg Fringe Festival Plein Air Event

We met today at Beech Springs Farm to paint in the gardens

while the Gettysburg Festival was holding its Farm to Table

culinary event. The guests were up in the barn eating, and we

were so thankful that one of them came down to let us know

that the National Weather Service had issued a severe

thunderstorm warning (accompanied with strong wind and hail)

for the area where we were painting. Thank you to that

very kind and thoughtful gentleman - we were able to pull

our gear beneath the overhang of the barn and ride out the storm.

We only got thunder, rain and a little wind - no hail, thank goodness!
