'Winter Apple'
An Original Oil Painting
©2018 Claire Beadon Carnell

'Winter Apple'
Oil on Archival Canvas Panel
8 x 6

This painting was created as part of a five-day challenge
I participated in this past January.  Each day we were to create
one painting in 20-30 minutes, and we were allowed to pre-mix
our colors.  It was a very good exercise, and a great way to get
a jump-start on painting in the New Year.

Day Twenty Three
Oil on Panel
8 x 6
125.00 plus PA Sales Tax/Free Shipping

This is my twenty third entry for Leslie Saeta's 'Thirty Paintings in
Thirty Days Challenge 2015'.  For this challenge, I have
decided to do thirty small studies from my trip last September
to Martha's Vineyard.  My hope is that some of these studies
will be worked into larger paintings.

As we got off the ferry to Chappaquiddick and walked
toward the infamous bridge (called Kennedy's car wash
by the natives), I saw this wonderful green boat in
a marshy area - and it was screaming 'Paint Me!'
I am glad that I finally did...

Here are my entries for Days 24 and 25,  for Leslie Saeta's
'Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days Challenge 2015'.  For this challenge,
I have decided to do thirty small studies from my trip last September
to Martha's Vineyard.  My hope is that some of these studies
will be worked into larger paintings.

It's been an interesting day to try and paint.  I sat down,
finished up my first painting ('Sunlit Path'), and then
started 'Coastal Inlet'.  I had only painted for an hour or
so when there was a loud bang outside...and unfortunately
I know what that means  - we have lived on this corner
for 25 years, and have experienced quite a few accidents - most
of which involve someone hitting our stone wall.

Our wall was safe, but both vehicles had passengers that were
taken to the hospital by ambulance.  I would much rather have
our wall injured than the people in their cars.

This is my eighteenth entry for Leslie Saeta's 'Thirty Paintings in
Thirty Days Challenge 2015'.  For this challenge, I have
decided to do thirty small studies from my trip last September
to Martha's Vineyard.  My hope is that some of these studies
will be worked into larger paintings.

This is the lighthouse at Edgartown, that I got
a chance to study and photograph while we
were across the water waiting for the ferry that
took us from Chappaquiddick back to the island.  Those
two boats were front and center, and looked like they
were put there purposely to guard the lighthouse!

These cabanas along the beach at Chappaquiddick reminded
me of little circus tents with their brightly striped and
pointed roofs.  How could you look at these
and not get a smile on your face?

decided to do thirty small studies from my trip last September
to Martha's Vineyard.  My hope is that some of these studies

After a morning of painting along the marshes
of Chappaquiddick, it was a delight to tour
this lovely Japanese garden, and to enjoy the cool
shade provided by the trees.  I loved the contrast
of the white birches against the other foliage.

While we were on our jeep excursion along the coast of

colorful wildflowers that were the perfect frame for
the blue, blue sea of Cape Poge.

decided to do thirty small studies from my trip last September
to Martha's Vineyard.  My hope is that some of these studies

The snow has been blowing all day, and the temperatures
have dipped into the single digits...the perfect escape
from this day was to paint the wonderful marshes
on Martha's Vineyard...and to dream of warm sea
breezes and the sound of the surf...

This is my second entry for Leslie Saeta's 'Thirty Paintings in
Thirty Days Challenge 2015'.  For this challenge, I have
decided to do thirty small studies from my trip last September
to Martha's Vineyard.  My hope is that some of these studies

My third painting is of what might be one of the
most beautiful lighthouses I have ever seen, and  behind
the lighthouse and over the hill is an incredible
view of the Cliffs of Aquinnah.
While we were there we were told that this coming
year the lighthouse will be moved further inland
to save it from ever-increasing erosion of the beaches.

'Tenderness'
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Tenderness'

When I went up to the local orchard to
get my apples recently, I noticed this pear in
one of the bins.  I was excited to see that the
leaves were still attached, and that they
hung at the top of the pear quite beautifully.
When I got home I set it up in the studio, and have
been working on it.  Think I am done with this
tender little pear.

THE LAST BLOOMS OF SUMMER
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'The Last Blooms of Summer'
Oil on Panel
8 x 6

It was a perfect day to work on this little
painting of some rose blooms that I had
plucked from my garden before
the cold and frost set in last year.  It makes me think
of the warmth and sunshine of Summer, and
hopes that it brings that same feeling to you!

Early Evening Birches
An Original Plein Air
Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Early Evening Birches'
Oil
8 x 6

This is a plein air of a small clump of  birches that
grow in the yard across the street from where I live.
I have been noticing the way the early evening light settles on the
ground and reflects on the trunks of the trees, and
thought it would make an interesting painting.

FALL TREE TOPS

'Fall Tree Tops'
Oil on Canvas
8 x 6

Day 98

I had planned to go out painting with my plein air group
today, but the morning started out grey and drizzly.
Not wanting to waste the morning, I started painting on
some projects I already have in the works.  By noon, the wind had
kicked the clouds out of the way, and the sun had popped out,
so I decided to paint the tree tops of the beautiful
maple trees in my yard.  Even with all of the snow we
got last weekend, there were still a lot of
wonderful, colorful leaves to paint!

Only two more to go...

Day 81

About a week and a half ago when we were under the
'Heat Dome' that graced us with temperatures over
100 degrees, I was doing everything I could to stay
cool and conserve energy, so I was painting in the house
instead of the studio.  At one point I had to run up to
the studio for some supplies, and just as I got to the bottom
of the steps leading up to the studio I happened
to see this strange little bird in the corner of our yard.
I slowly backed up and got my camera from the house,
and was quite surprised and pleased to find that he was
still there.  As I crept forward to take closer pictures,
another one of these birds flew out of our huge hemlock.
I turned to look up into the hemlock and saw three more
of these birds!

My immediate thought based on the curved neck,
long beak and legs on this bird was that it was in the
heron/cormorant family.  I got my pictures then went into
research what I had photographed, and learned that
these were juvenile green herons.  We had the
pleasure of seeing them again two days later - not
sure what brought them into my yard...perhaps
they heard that I was coming close to finishing my
100 Paintings in 100 Days Challenge 'Inspirations from
a Back Yard' Challenge and wanted to get painted!
I try not to disappoint...

Day 80

With the very wet Spring that we had this year, I
never was able to get my sunflower seeds in the
ground - such a disappointment as I love them for
their beauty and for the seeds they provide for the birds.

My daughter had a random seed pop up in
her veggie garden - a sunflower that is at least seven
feet tall!  I got some photographs of this beautiful stray
sunflower, and used them to develop my painting.
May have to take another picture of this once it
is completely dry - sorry for the glare!

Day 78

Even though the temperatures here in South Central PA
are in the mid-nineties today, I decided to do a
plein air of some of my flowers...from under the shade
of my back porch.  Not only did it keep me out from the
intense heat of the blaring sun, but I was only about
ten steps away from my kitchen where air-conditioning,
and ice and water were easily accessed - a
definite plus in this heat!

My mother and her mother were both avid gardeners, and
I'd have to say that I inherited that gardening gene.  There isn't a flower
out in my yard that I don't admire and appreciate - from the
roses and lilies, to the simple clover in the grass.  Daisies have
always been appealing to me because of their fresh, clean
look - they always brighten up the flower beds!
