REDBUDS ALONG THE BATTLEFIELD
Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Redbuds Along the Battlefield'
Oil  9 x 12

Last Spring we took a road trip to the Gettysburg Battlefield
and I was able to get some nice photographs of the redbuds
and dogwoods blooming.  This particular view is from
Ayers Avenue along the Auto Tour.  I loved the way the
light was streaming through the trees, catching the
colors of the redbuds and creating beautiful diagonal
 shadows in the foreground.

MOUNTAIN LAUREL ON THE RIDGE
Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Mountain Laurel on the Ridge'
Oil  18 x 14

On the mountain by our cabin, mountain laurel grows
heavily in certain areas, and I am always so awed
by the amazing range of colors in these beautiful wild
flowers.  Along the ridge where they are most prevalent, I have
seen the colors range from a deep rosy pink to the palest
pink blush.

I especially liked the way the light was shining through
this particular section of mountain laurel, and really
worked to get what I wanted.  What do you think?

HAUNTED
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Haunted'
Oil  7 x 5
Available

I did this painting as part of the Daily Paintworks
'The Lincoln Challenge'.  I've always thought that
Lincoln had such a haunted, tragic countenance, and I was
hoping to catch that in doing this portrait of him.  It's not all
that difficult to understand why he looked as though he
carried the weight of the world on his shoulders.
I chose to paint him using only burnt umber, ultramarine blue
and white as part of the 'black and white' aspect of the challenge.

LEFTOVER BLOSSOMS
by Claire Beadon Carnell
Plein Air
100 Paintings in 100 Days Challenge
'Inspirations from a Back Yard'
73/100

'Leftover Blossoms'
Oil 5 x 7
73/100

Day 73

I took advantage of the beautiful weather today and did this
little painting of a dried hydrangea blossom that was still
on the bush.  I like to leave the blossoms on during the winter
to add a little interest to the garden.  The green of the pine tree
in the background really made the flowers stand out.

AH, SPRING!

'Ah, Spring'
Oil 5 x 7
72/100

Day 72

We've lived in our house for over twenty years, and I will
never forget the first Spring, and our surprize and joy at seeing these
lovely purple crocus growing all through our lawn.  Each year,
as soon as we get a warm day, they start to pop out all
over, and often in the most unexpected places!

I wasn't able to get out with the Susquehanna Valley Plein Air
Painters yesterday when they went to Wildwood yesterday, so
I took advantage of the beautiful weather today and went out
into my own back yard to do some plein air painting - so much fun!

SNEAK PEEK of UPCOMING PAINTING
by Claire Beadon Carnell

I've been working on finishing up several larger pieces in
the studio, and thought it would be fun to post a little
peek of one of the paintings.   Hope to have this piece
done within the next week or so.

ROMANCE IN THE GARDEN
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Romance in the Garden'
Oil  12 x 9
Available

This past Friday, I painted at the PA Garden Show of York.
A room that brought the feeling of an interior space set up in
the open air of a garden, (created by landscape designer Kathy Elliot
of Rockelman's Nursery), immediately caught my attention.
I quickly set up my gear to paint this intimate setting of table and two
chairs, wine and flowers - all set under a pergola with draped corners
that added up to a perfect spot for romance.
As I was painting, I kept thinking how much I would like to have
a space like this in my own garden at home (so I am hoping my
husband reads this blog entry!)
