YELLOW BUTTERFLY BUSH

Day 48

I was over at my daughter's house this morning
to see my grandson off to his first day of second grade,
and as I was leaving I snitched a few sprigs from her
yellow butterfly bush.    The blooms are really starting to fade, and
I've been wanting to paint it all summer because of the
buttery color of the blossoms.  I just hope that she can give me a
baby from it next spring so that I can have some in my own garden!

'Sunny Day'
Oil   11 x 14

Day 47

Members of our plein air group (Susquehanna Valley
Plein Air Painters) have spent the last two days
painting the sunflower fields of Ashcombe's Garden
Center. In addition to the beautiful sunflowers,
there were butterflies, bees and goldfinches and even a baby
bunny rabbit that squealed when one of our painters
walked a little too close to where he was hiding.

Oil   6 x 8

Day 46

We've had some pretty intense, fast-moving storms this
summer. The other day we went from sunny skies to
a complete downpour - and then the sun came back out
and these clouds appeared. I grabbed my camera
to get some shots because I knew I wanted to
paint this!

I DREAM OF FIGS
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'I Dream of Figs'
Oil 6 x 8

I did this painting as part of the online painting challenge
Paint and Draw Together, which was started by artist
Lela Stankovic.

When I first started working on this painting, I
foolishly thought that it would be something I could
accomplish without too much difficulty...then I started
working on the colors and textures of the figs...
Consequently, every night I dreamt of
the figs, and how I would paint them!

KINGS GAP GARDEN
by Claire Beadon Carnell
100 Paintings in 100 Days Challenge
'Inspirations from a Back Yard'
45/100

'Kings Gap Garden'
Oil   9 x 12
45/100

Day 45

This painting was done on sight at the
Kings Gap State Park this past Wednesday.
I had come home from painting, tucked my plein air
equipment away and completely forgot that my painting was
still in my pochade box (it's been a very busy week!)

Kings Gap is such a beautiful place. I can not begin to
describe the joy it is to paint there with butterflies and
dragonflies drifting around the flowers - and that's
just the garden.

'Bits of Summer 2'
Oil   6 x 8

Day 44

I have been wanting to do another version of
'Bits of Summer' since I finished the first piece.
This is more of a close up than the first version,
and really focuses in on the flowers. I think this
just might evolve into a third version...at least!

ROOMMATES

Day 43

Another nest found in the backyard, this
time by my daughter. It's so nice that she and
my grandson are always on the look-out to see if
they can find me interesting subject matter to paint.
This nest was so well made - very soft, and made
almost entirely of the same type of grasses.
I need to do some investigation to see what
bird would create a nest like this - I am sure
that it wouldn't look anything like these three
roomates.
Do any of you know?

'Thistle
Oil 4 x 4

Day 42

The thistle is such a humble weed...yet
this plant has been the national symbol of Scotland
for over 500 years, and is deeply embedded in
Scottish legend and lore.

TWO MILE HOUSE GARDEN

'Two Mile House Garden'
Oil 6 x 8
41/100

Day 41

I painted this yesterday morning in the
gardens of Two Mile House, which is an historical
property owned and carefully tended by
the Cumberland County Historical Society.
While we were there painting, we had the pleasure
of a visit from a red-tailed hawk, who sat in
a cherry tree and 'talked' to us before she
flew away. Quite a treat!

BIRD'S NEST

100 Paintings in 100 Days Challenge
'Inspirations from a Back Yard'
40/100

'Bird's Nest'
Oil 5 x 7
40/100

Day 40

Found this little nest in my yard after a
particularly gusty thunderstorm. It always
makes me a little sad to find that
a nest has been blown out of a
tree - the birds work so hard to make their
homes. The eggs are from my stash in
my studio - they are the most authenitic-looking
eggs I have been able to find!

FLOATING DOWNSTREAM
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Floating Downstream'
Oil 24 x 30

This is a painting of an incredibly old and beautiful
oak tree that lives on the banks of one of the tributaries
of the Yellow Breeches Creek, along the Dickinson School Road.
I am so glad that I got to paint it, because age and
some recent bad weather have taken its toll on this
tree, and unfortunately it is just a shell of its former self.

This painting will be on exhibit with other paintings
from members of the Daily Painters of Pennsylvania blog
at the Pennsylvania State Capitol Building East Wing Rotunda
in Harrisburg, PA during the month of September 2010.

READY FOR BREAKFAST
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Ready for Breakfast'
Oil 8 x 8
Available

Initially I wanted to paint this because it was a
white on white study, but I soon started having fun
just painting the spaces around the eggs as they
nestled in the dish. There's so much subtle color in
this, the warms and cools in both the dish and the eggs.
Definitely a painting that taught me a few things!

'Deckman Farm'
Oil 6 x 12
39/100

Day 39

A plein air view of another backyard - the Deckman Farm
in Mechanicsburg (who are also the owners
of Mountain View Nursery). The day began with overcast
skies, but started to clear up as the painting proceeded.
It's a beautiful farm, with a potential painting available
with every turn of your head.
