With another snow storm in the forecast for next week, my
mind turned to thoughts of Spring this morning. This is the
work I was able to get done today, and I hope to get it
finished tomorrow. I tried something very different today,
and am really pleased with the results.
Usually I tint my canvas with yellow ochre or another color
and let it dry before I begin a painting, but today I painted
much of the background area with a warm pinkish coral color,
then painted right on top of this wet layer. I applied the paint
loosely and was careful not to overwork it so it didn't get muddy.

I think it is a gorgeous showing of my favorite flower! I don't paint in oils much but when I do, it is sometimes wet on wet. I really have to lay it on thick when applying a new color over another, such as in the background here or in a sky or over ground. Hopefully my oils class (that is supposed to begin in a little over a week) will show me some tricks.
Hi Claire - the pinkish coral underpainting works wonderfully in this one. This one is lovely! I agree, it may be time for nicer weather!!
I think the pink/coral worked. I usually just use sienna or gray to tone canvas. I may try some other colors as well.
