DSFDF Annual Portrait Challenge 2009

I have just started working on my DSFDF Portrait Challenge. We got our pictures last week, and although we are not told who our subjects are, I am almost certain I
know who I am painting :) This is the first time I have participated in the portrait challenge, and I am already having a blast!

Here's my first stage. I cropped my photo, then drew a grid on my canvas before starting to draw the face in. I loved the eyes in the photograph, and really want them to be accentuated in the actual painting.

What fun!!!

I don't know who she is, Claire, but she is coming along beautifully! Maybe I should use grids when doing portraits...or anything else for that matter! It seems to work so well for so many!

Glad to see you entered this, Claire. I didn't for fear I wouldn't get it done.. I'm so ill-prepapred for Christmas. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress on this one.

Dear Claire,

ah, I see, you know what's going on ;)
I guess you'll be doing a wonderful job!

See you
Petra

Thanks, Sherry. I don't do portraits that much (although I want to start to do more), and I have found this method really helpful when working with a photograph. It really does facilitate getting the facial features down where they need to go...course I usually start to lose them when the paint begins to go on :)

Thanks, Pat - I'll probably be getting mine in at the very last minute, but I really, really wanted to do this.

Petra, I will do my best to bring out your natural beauty. When I looked at your photo( aside from recognizing you) I thought that you bear a resemblance to one of my favorite actresses, Emma Thompson. This will be fun. I really like what you have down so far with mine - my daughter saw it on my blog roll first and instantly recognized it as me!

Lookes like a great start Claire. Glad to see that I'm not the only one that graphs! If it's good enough for the old masters, it's good enough for me.

Thanks, Dominique. I am taking advantage of our snow storm today and have started with the color! FUN STUFF!!!

Yeah Claire, I graphed mine too! As you say, the features need to be in the right place. I was astonished at how wrong I would have been if I had drawn it without the grid. You portrait of Petra is lovely, one of my favorites in a field of excellent work.
