INRI

'INRI'
Oil 8 x 8
Entry for 'Palm Sunday to Ressurection' Exhibit
Art & Soul Gallery
900 Market St., Lemoyne, PA 17043

This is a piece that I currently have in the 'Palm Sunday to
Ressurection' exhibit at the Art & Soul Gallery in
Lemoyne, PA. When I read about the plans for this
exhibit, a picture immediately came into my mind.
I placed the crown of thorns on the canvas so that it
created the letter 'C' for Christ, and I arranged the
crucifixion nails for 'INRI' in a cross shaped format.
This is a very different subject matter for me, and I
really enjoyed working on it.

Claire, I love this piece. I am so glad to hear your thought processes too as to the placement of the crown of thorns. I wouldn't have thought of it but it is a fabulous handling and for the right reason. I've always wondered what 'INRI' stands for...do you know? I also didn't know the the two 'I's' were nails. Learn something new every day.

Thanks, Sherry. Pontius Pilate had 'IRNI' inscribed on the top of Jesus's cross, and the words he used were meant to mock Jesus. The inscription 'INRI' means 'Jesus Christ of Nazareth, King of the Jews'.

Claire, this piece moves me - my eyes teared before even reading your post. What an inspired entry for the exhibit! My first thoughts that maybe if it were larger it could shout across the room were immediately replaced by the reminder that quite words and whispers are much more effective. Wish I could be there this afternoon for the reception!
Best of luck with the exhibit!

Claire, this painting was even better seen up close and personal. What a wonderful, creative idea. I saw a lot of people looking at it. There was a nice turn out, but missed you.

I too think it's very moving. I like how you've got the essential in there, and got rid of unnecessary visual distractions...it it what it is, and it's strong, and incredibly sad and yet so hopeful...a very poignant piece.

Claire, this IS different, but so pretty. The thorns and nails are so powerful. Love it!

I am very touched by all of your comments, and especially that you understood my concept in doing this painting. I almost entitled this 'The Ultimate Sacrifice', but decided to keep it pure and simple.
