THE LAST DAYS OF WINTER

'Last Days of Winter'
Oil 6 x 6

This has been a tough week; a tougher day. We
celebrated my mother-in-law's 85th birthday last
Saturday, and the next day she developed a serious
case of bronchitis that sent her to the hospital. She
was only in the hospital a day when she fell and broke
her hip. Now she is in intensive care, and we are
praying that she will be strong enough to overcome
all the complications that have resulted from this
break.
After a day spent at the hospital, I came home emotionally
depleted. I was sitting looking out the window of the spare
bedroom I use as my 'in-house' studio, and I was thinking
what a gloomy ugly day it was...then I saw that little strip
of snow on the top of the golden hill, and the russet color of the oak
leaves that have clung to the trees even with the incredibly high
winds we have had this winter. And hope entered my
heart again. I picked up my brushes and did this little
painting very quickly. It felt good to create something when
I felt like there was nothing left in me to give.
And I remembered to thank God again for this gift.

If you would like to see more of my work, please check out

I hope everything works out with your mother in law, and that this coming week is better than the last. What a great way to find a bright spot in your day. Lovely little painting :)

I am so sorry you and your family are experiencing this difficult time right now. Sometimes it really feels as though we can't carry all that we are given, I'm glad you were able to lose yourself in this lovely little landscape.

Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving your sweet comment about our precious Zoe. We miss her greatly and our home is filled with sadness, but she brought us much joy and I would not trade that for anything.

With you painting you could find a nice moment to forget your sadness.
Beautiful landscape.

Thanks to everyone for your supportive comments - I really appreciate your well-wishes for my mother-in-law. I was one of the lucky ones because my mother-in-law and I have a wonderful relationship.

Claire, when I saw this painting, it made me want to be in Pennsylvania. What an inspiring place for painters. Then I read your blog and it really touched my heart. How wonderful that you painting practice keeps you in touch with your source and enables you to recognize and celebrate the beauty in our world despite the sadness and hardships in your life.

There is always hope! Spring is coming even though it did seem this winter would never end! Keep painting to, as Hope C. says, to stay close to your source of strength.

For you I hope that your mother-in-law fairs well through this scary time. Mine fell at night, at home alone about 4 years ago, breaking her hip and having to crawl to the phone. Everyone thought it was the end when she did badly after surgery. She is now 96 and showing no signs of letting that 'little mishap' slow her down. There is hope!

Before reading the post, I was really drawn into this painting. I can feel and smell the brisk air - I'm there! After reading the post, I understand how you did it! You were using your gift to restore your strength and the hope and peace flowed onto this little canvas! Hopefully your MIL is much improved and makes a complete recovery.

Thinking of you during these difficult days, Claire! With the enduring cold weather it could not have been easy to sit down and paint. Yet you have created a very charming depiction of a somewhat greyish day!
