This is a small golden delicious apple from the dwarf
apple tree beside my vegetable garden. Because I don't
spray, most of the apples feed the deer.
This one managed to keep a smooth skin, so I saved
it out to paint.

Gourds amaze me - you plant the seeds and you never
truly know what you are going to get - so it is such a nice
surprize to find in the garden. These are both from the
winged gourd family, and yet they have their own distinct
'personalities'. I thought the first one was a bit devilish,
and quite perfect for Halloween!

Another little bit of whimsey that was born from the discovery
of a delicate little bird's nest (thanks to my grandson, Jake).
The main body of the nest is built from fragile plant stems, complete
with tiny dried leaves. The interior of the nest is so finely lined with
horsehair - it is swirled into the inner walls with such finesse and beauty!
Add into this nest a 3" china doll baby I have had for years...then have this
nest floating down from the sky...and the familiar lullaby starts working
its way into my head as I paint...

MORNING CLOUDS AT AMITY HALL
Plein Air Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell
'Morning Clouds at Amity Hall'
Oil 9 x 12
Last week we had a beautiful morning to paint along the
shore of the Susquehanna River at Amity Hall. The weather
was cool and breezy, and while our group (Susquehanna Valley
Plein Air Painters) was there we saw a bald eagle, egrets, several
great blue herons and an osprey. Hmmm... doesn't take much
to figure out why I love plein air painting!

I thought that my tomatoes were pretty much done for
the season, but when I went out this past weekend I found
a few more, along with this heirloom beauty. Loving tomatoes
as much as I do, there is a bit of sadness knowing that the season is
finishing up...but I am looking into the indoor hydoponic gardens
to see what we can get growing in the cold months!

Day 51
I have seen these acorns at Kings Gap State Park, and
also right in the front yard of our cabin in the woods.
They were green for so long, and then all at once they
turned a beautiful chestnut brown. What is really interesting
is that the caps are almost as thin as porcelain, yet can
fall from the trees and remain intact. Nature will never
fail to impress and astound me...

KINGS GAP WATER TOWER
by Claire Beadon Carnell
'Kings Gap Water Tower'

This unique round water tower can be found beside the
gardens at Kings Gap State Park here in Pennsylvania.
It took a beating because of ice accumulation this past
winter, but work is being done to repair the damage.
It would be such a shame to lose this beautiful
structure!

I have to admit, that of all of the colors in the spectrum,
orange is my least favorite...except when it comes to flowers.
Orange flowers have such a happy dispositon, and they look
great in any spot in the garden, especially if they are paired with
blue or purple. I can't imagine NOT having orange in my garden,
but you definitely won't find it on the walls of my home!
This particular zinnia is from the Kings Gap State Park
flower garden. There was a mass of zinnias begging to be
painted, along with all of the butterflies and bees that were
stopping by them to get some lunch. Think you'll be seeing more
of them... :)

These little toadstools were hiding under the base
of the meadow sage. As the heat of the day increased,
the caps of the toadstools expanded. I just know that
there have to be some garden fairies hiding in there
somewhere...
