ZIPPO MAGIC
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Zippo Magic'
Oil  6 x 6

This is my entry for Carol Marine's Daily Paintworks
challenge this week.  The photograph was submitted by
Michael Naples, and participants were only allowed to use
a palette consisting of ultramarine blue, burnt sienna and white.
You would think that using such a limited palette might make this
challenge more difficult, but in fact it was easier to focus on
value shifts without the distraction of a lot of color, and quite
interesting to see the variety of color that could actually be
created from these three colors.
Have to say, I am LOVING these challenges!

BIGHORN SHEEP
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Bighorn Sheep'
Oil  9 x 12

I used to be terrified of sheep and goats when I was little.
We had visited a farm, and being the ever-inquisitive child that
I was, I wandered into a barn all by myself.  All I remember
is that it was dimly lit, and all of these strange-eyed animals
were staring at me.  The next thing I remember is that I had been
knocked onto my backside by an overly aggressive billy goat!
I did not want to be around sheep or goats for quite some time.

I wanted to paint this wooly sheep when Gary Keimig posted it
for his Wilderness Challenge, but I never got to do it before
the challenge ended.  I liked the quiet spirit of this sheep, as
well as its beautifully textured coat - which was also full of color.
Thank goodness I appreciate sheep and goats now, and am
no longer afraid of them!!

CHASING STEVIE
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Chasing Stevie'
 Oil  7 x 5

I was watching my three grandchildren the other day,
and couldn't help but think that when you have three
children to chase after, it sure would
be nice to have an extra set of hands!  Good thing
the little one, Stevie, does not run too fast yet...

SOLD
TRINITY
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Trinity'
Oil  30 x 24
Available

Last fall, I was painting at the historical Two Mile House,
which is in Carlisle, PA (and is owned by the Cumberland
County Historical Society).  I took a break to walk through the
wooded acres in the back of the property, and found these three
black locust growing up side by side, lifting their broken
limbs up to the heavens.

I've always believed that no matter how hard life gets, regardless
of the challenges we must face, our faith will guide us through
even the worst of times.  For me, this painting is an embodiment
 of that belief.

THREE GRAPES - 10 MINUTE CHALLENGE
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Three Grapes'
Oil  6 x 6

This is my entry into Carol Marine's Daily Paintworks
Ten Minute Challenge.  The object was to take a canvas,
divide it into squares and then take a simple subject matter
and do a different ten minute study of the subject in each
square.  I chose to use a very limited palette, and didn't
have my timer in view, because I didn't want
my focus to be on the time itself.  Have to admit that I was so
involved with painting the grapes that I jumped each
time the timer buzzed...  It's a great challenge!!!

GHOSTLY GARDEN VISITOR
by Claire Beadon Carnell
100 Paintings in 100 Days Challenge
'Inspirations from a Back Yard'
71/100

'Ghostly Garden Visitor'
Oil 6 x 6
71/100

Day 71

I get a lot of these cabbage moths in my garden during the
summer months, and although I know they wreak havok
on my cabbage heads and other veggies, I  still enjoy their delicate
and ethereal presence as they flit from plant to plant.  This one decided
that the meadow sage was going to be his lunch du jour.

SUMMER PLUMS
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Summer Plums'
Oil  8 x 10
Available

There's nothing like sun-kissed, fresh fruit right off the tree.  I
loved the color of these plums, especially with one of the plum's
interior flesh showing.  The plate is one of many I have that came
down to me from my mother - it is an 'orphan', but one I have
always treasured because of the beautiful purple flower on the edge.
It just seemed the perfect place for the plums to rest before they
became part of our meal.
