This painting is a result from a recent painting
excursion I took to Cape Cod this past September.
I am always fascinated by the patterning of the
marshes, and the way the water weaves
in and out and around the grasses.  What a
perfect place for an egret to visit!

'Susquehanna Passage' can be seen at the
Art & Soul Gallery in Lemoyne, PA.

'Susquehanna Passage'
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Susquehanna Passage'
© Claire Beadon Carnell
Oil on linen panel
18 x 24

This is the view from the former offices of
Susquehanna Surgeons on Front Street in
Wormleysburg, PA.  I was with my husband
for the follow-up for some surgery he
had last September, and when I walked into
the waiting room, the view of the river
was breathtaking.  The late afternoon  light
colored the sky and river, and there was a touch
of Autumn starting to show in the foliage.  I got an awful
photograph of the scene through some really
bug-stained windows, but my visual memory
helped me paint this.

'A is for Apple'
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'A is for Apple'

I have had some vintage wooden typefaces for
years.  Some are large (6 inches high), and
some are much smaller, and I have always loved
them and wanted to do something with them.
When I got my apples this fall, the idea to
incorporate them into a painting with the
typeface came into mind, and here is the result.

'Great Marshes to Cape Cod Trail'
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Great Marshes to Cape Cod Trail'
(Low Tide, Barnstable, MA)
© Claire Beadon Carnell
Oil
12 x 12

I had never been to Barnstable, MA before, so
my husband and I decided to head in that direction
when we were up there this past September.
We found a treasure...a nature preserve called
the Great Marshes to Cape Cod Trail.  It was a
very hot day (high 90's), but we hiked in about 2 miles and
saw the most incredible landscape.  Gigantic sand dunes
flanked us on the left, and gorgeous marshes
were on the right.  It immediately became one
of my favorite places in Cape Cod.

This painting will be on display at the
Mechanicsburg Art Center in the
Recent Paintings from the Cape exhibit.
The opening reception is December 14,
6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Oil Painting

This blue crab got washed ashore on the wet sand one
cloudy morning in Cape Cod.  We had stopped to paint
at a little inlet, and were worried about the
forecast of rain.  It wasn't rain that chased us away,
it was the rising tide that suddenly appeared two feet
away from where we were painting!

This painting will be on display at the

They say the third time is the charm...
I  have actually painted this scene twice
before, and was so unhappy with the results
that I abandoned the work.  The stubborn streak
in me made me try one more time, and when
I reached the same point of frustration that
I had reached with the previous paintings, I
decided that I was going to fight through.
I am glad that I stuck with it and FINALLY
got the results that I wanted.

I finished this painting several months ago,

it is a painting of a place that I love.

'Summer Along the Hudson River'

Last Summer, my husband and I traveled
to Albany, New York, and then down the
Hudson River Valley.  The views were incredible,
and I found this one when we decided to take
a side road that led us right to the water's edge.
While there, we met four other people
visiting that spot, and we discovered that
the one couple was from the Army War College
in Carlisle (which is close to our home)
It IS a small world!

When I went up to the local orchard to
get my apples recently, I noticed this pear in
one of the bins.  I was excited to see that the
leaves were still attached, and that they
hung at the top of the pear quite beautifully.
When I got home I set it up in the studio, and have
been working on it.  Think I am done with this
tender little pear.

I used to travel a lot on the Zion Road until
recently when a bridge was closed for repairs,
which unfortunately closed Zion Road as well.
It's a favorite place that I have seen and
admired in all of the seasons, and every time
I drive down it I get such a sense of peace.

Hope this painting gives you the same feeling!

I have often been asked what colors I use to get
the wide variety of greens in my landscapes, and
it always surprises people that I get these greens
by using a very limited palette.

This Saturday (11/26/2013), I will be teaching

I spotted these beautiful blue flowers up
on Little Round Top (Gettysburg Battlefield National Park)
one Summer morning when I had gone up there to paint.
It seems as though every time I go up there I see something
new.  It's such an amazing place, and never fails
to intrigue me.

Have you ever been driving somewhere and suddenly
have this irresistible urge to take a different
route from the one you normally take?  I am
so glad I followed my instincts this past summer.
Instead of travelling my normal pathway to Hanover,
I decided to take another road and found this
incredible field of pinkish weeds
cloaked in the morning light.

This is why I always carry a camera with me...

'Windy Day at Fort Hill'

An Original Plein Air

'Windy Day at Fort Hill'
(Cape Cod, MA)

Finally, after a week of being home from Cape Cod,
I was able to unload my paintings!  This particular
painting was painted on Sept. 11, on a very windy day.
I hadn't planned to go to Fort Hill to paint, but
stopped there so my husband could see what a
beautiful place it was.  Of course when I saw the
way the wind was blowing the trees and the goldenrod
in the foreground, my muse started to call...

While we were there (at about the time the first airplane
hit the WTC twelve years ago on the same day)
an older gentleman (a fireman) dressed in full kilt
walked up to the peak of the hill, and started playing a
tribute to the victims of 9/11 on his bagpipes.  When
he played 'Amazing Grace', there wasn't a dry
eye to be found...it was profound.
We will never forget.

While in Cape Cod last week, I had gone to
West Dennis Beach in the hopes of painting
the sunset, but when I turned my back to the
sunset and saw this gorgeous evening light, I
immediately knew what I would be painting.  It was
cold and very windy that evening, but setting up my
gear beside the car to block the wind, I was able
to paint quickly and capture the fleeting light.

'Late Summer Garden' (Kings Gap)
An Original Plein Air
Oil Painting

Plein Air

Yesterday I painted up at Kings Gap State Park with
my good friend and fellow artist, Mary Beth Brath.
She had suggested we go there to paint in the
garden, and the moment I started driving up that
long curvy drive to the top of the mountain, I
knew this is just what I needed!   The garden is
gorgeous, and complete with a small pond with
water lilies and frogs.

The zinnias called to me, and when I walked
away from them to look at some of the other
parts of the garden, they just called louder - so
that's what I painted!

Thanks to a friend up on Facebook, I was
made aware that there were rolling hills
of sunflowers being grown by Messiah College
in Grantham, PA. My friend and fellow artist
Pat Koscienski and I went there to paint
yesterday.  The heavy rains we had the previous
week had beaten up the blossoms a bit, but
it still was an amazing sight to behold.

I did use some artistic license with this and had
the sunflowers facing toward me...for some
reason they were all being shy, and their faces
were pointing away from us, and toward the sun :)

My painting in progress

Two years ago, I got the opportunity to go
up to Nancy and Eric Olson's farm in Port Royal
to paint their fields of sunflowers.  While I
was there I walked around and got some
photographs, and this is one of the amazing
views I found that I wanted to paint.
I even liked the little bit of algae in the water
that created breaks in the stillness.

fun painting part of her home and her gorgeous

There are only a few things that I might

'Conodoguinet Reflections'
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Conodoguinet Reflections'

Oil
12 x16

When I was in elementary school, my
Great-Aunt Margaret's goal was to teach
me how to spell a new and difficult word
each time I visited her during summer
vacation.  She always made it fun, but didn't
give up until how I learned to spell the word
she had chosen.   'Conodoguinet' (for the
Conodoguinet Creek that ran through
Camp Hill, PA) was one of the toughest to
learn, but I never forgot how to spell it after all
of these years!

I think Great-Aunt Margaret would have
liked that I painted this, and that I remembered
how to spell the name of the creek as well :)

I have not been able to get out to paint en plein air
in ages, so when a friend called me this afternoon to let
me know that the moonflowers were blooming in
the shade of her shed,  I packed up a minimal
amount of supplies and went up to paint.
I liked the soothing palette of colors, and the relatively
simple design of this scene...and of course
those wonderful flowers.  It's good to be getting

OFF THE GRID FOR AWHILE
Claire Beadon Carnell
Original Oil Paintings

Hello my blog friends!  I have not been posting lately, and have missed all of you.  About three weeks ago I had to have some surgery on the vertebrae in my neck, and I have been in the process of recovering.  Just yesterday I was able to paint again for the first time in four weeks, and it was such a pleasure.

I hope to have some things to post soon, and look forward to catching up with everyone to see what you all have been working on.

Here's a glimpse of the start of an underpainting for a new painting that I just started this afternoon...

 'April showers bring May flowers...'
I have often thought that the rain gives a
certain richness to color.  In this case, a light
April Shower brought out the colors in the
wet stone path, as well as heightened
the color of those Virginia bluebells.
When I saw this scene at my yoga instructor's

FLOWERS FROM MY GARDEN

I picked these flowers from my garden early
yesterday morning so that I could take them
to the annual student show that I hold for
all of my students to display the beautiful
work they have done over the past year.

They were so pretty that I decided to do
a plein air painting of them this afternoon right on the
deck of my studio.   This is the result of a little
over two hours of work.  I need to do a bit more
in the studio, but was happy with what
I was able to accomplish in that period of time.

APPLE TREES ON THE HILL
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

10 x 20

This Spring, a friend of mine from my high school days
let me know that her sister lived on an orchard that
was mere miles from my house, and that I was welcome
to go paint there.  I got a great tour from my friend's
sister, and then did a quick study of a view of
the apple trees from the top of a hill.

When I got home, I realized right away that I wanted to
do a larger studio piece, because I loved the
way the blue of the mountains peeked through
the white and soft pink blossoms of the trees.
It is a gorgeous orchard, and hope I can go back
and paint there again next spring!
