UNDER THE ROSE ARBOR
An Original Plein Air Oil Painting

I found this beautiful Rose Arbor on
St. John's Alley in Camp Hill while painting
in the Camp Hill Plein Air Event.  Everything about
the scene appealed to me except one
thing - there were no blooms, only rosebuds.
I really wanted to add the roses, and was so
glad when the owner came out to see what
I was painting and I was able to ask her
what color the roses were when they were
in flower!  That's one of the advantages
of being an artist, you can paint in the roses
even before they have bloomed.

Ooh, I do like your style, Claire! I doubt I would have had the idea to paint them in bloom. Gorgeous!

This is a gorgeous piece, Claire and by adding the rose buds made it even more beautiful!!!

This is VERY nice, Claire. Beautiful work! The rose bush looks so full, like you can see roses in front and ones further back.

Yes, being able to paint roses when they aren't there is a plus! This is lovely - I really like the foreground boldness vs. the background haze/distance you have created - you have such great scenery and subject matter where you are!

Love the rose arbor & your addition of the roses makes it sweet! The open gate makes this painting even more inviting!

Sherry, a little boy was driving up and down the alley on his Big Wheel monitoring the progress of my painting. He was so distressed that I had painted flowers where there were none...I told him that was the magic of painting!

Yes I do, Pattie - I am very fortunate to live is such a beautiful area. The small towns have so much charm, the rural areas are full of potential for landscape painting, and we are lucky that we are only hours away from NYC, Baltimore, Philadelphia or Washington, DC.

Thank you, Nan. I painted the gate open on purpose to invite the viewer into the painting!
