I grabbed my pochade box to get ready to go

painting this morning, and remembered that I had never

removed this plein air painting I had done last week at

Children's Lake in Boiling Springs. That day at the lake was a perfect

Summer's day, with ducks and their babies, geese and swans

out on the lake...but this beautiful old willow is what caught my eye.

Imagine how many children this old tree has seen feeding the

ducks over the years!

On my very first day painting for the Westfield, NY
Plein Air Event, I went to Barcelona Harbor
and found this great little lighthouse. The clouds
were in and out, but when they were out the light
that was striking the lighthouse was incredible.
Such a beautiful place, and I had such
an amazing time with the other artists who
were participating - I love my job!

INTO THE DEEP

I love Fuller Lake, and all of the little pockets of beauty

you can find if you just take the time to look. This spot is

at one end of the lake, and always holds surprises - especially

in Autumn when the colors of the leaves start to change.

The lake itself is very deep (125 feet), and as we discovered while

we were painting, it is also a place enjoyed by scuba divers.

As I was standing on the shore opposite this scene, I heard

some bubbling noises and looked into the water. About five

feet below the water's surface, two scuba divers were exploring

all the under-water treasures. The things you see while

painting outdoors - no wonder I like it so much!

RON DONOUGHE WORKSHOP

Last Thursday I headed up to Red Barn Arts in Wellsboro, PA

to attend artist (and fellow Daily Painters of Pennsylvania member)

Ron Donoughe's plein air workshop. Ever since I became aware of

Ron's phenomenal paintings, I have been hoping he would offer

a workshop. So when I saw that he was conducting one

in Wellsboro, PA, I immediately signed up.

With each painting exercise we did, Ron really focused on

the foundations - the very elements that help to make a painting

(or any work of art) 'work'. It's no exaggeration to say

that I learned more from Ron about painting

fundamentals than I learned in my four years

of college pursuing my art degree.

Here are three of the five studies I did during the workshop. They

are not 'complete' paintings, but exercises to practice what

we learned from Ron. This first 10 x 8 study was done from

inside the Red Barn Arts looking out an

open window (we were having some light rain).

The second 9 x 12 study was done up at the Little Grand Canyon

This third study was done in downtown Wellsboro, and was the most

challenging - especially the shadow areas in the yellow houses.

But that's why I chose to paint this - I knew it would

be a great learning experience!

My thanks to Ron for such a fantastic workshop, and also

to Jeff and Tania at Red Barn Arts for making this all happen!

On the last day of the Gettysburg Festival Artist Colony,

we decided to go to Little Round Top to paint

in the morning light. It was a beautiful day, and I
really enjoyed painting this area that was directly
to the left of the 12th and 44th New York Infantry
Marker - also called the 'castle'. I liked the impressionistic
look of the scene, and tried to capture that.

I thought this picture really expressed a mother's love

for her baby. Thanks to Patricia Griffin for providing

such an inspiring project for this month's DPP Challenge!

Hope that everyone is having a very happy

Memorial Day weekend. Both my father and my

father-in-law were decorated WWII veterans, and I

have always been thankful for all of the people who

protect and serve our country so selflessly so that

we can live in freedom.

Among all of the 'stuff' that resides in my studio is a

small collection of old bottles I have collected over the

years. They always make the neatest vases for those

small bouquets of treasures from the garden - in this

case some late-blooming lavender.

FALL GLORY

This past Saturday, a group of artists met up

to paint at the beautiful Blue Hound Farm in Lewisberry, PA.

Mary Beth Brath and Brownyn Hughes arranged the event,

which included a tour of the farm before we started to paint,

refreshments and a delicious supper and then a critique of our

day's work by Cathy Mabius. It was an absolutely

delightful day - full of laughs because of the mishaps

caused by the gusty winds, as well as the antics of the

various farm animals!

This is the first painting I worked on - of a glorious tree out

in the field. The wind was relentless - had to hold on to the

easel to keep it steady. As I was getting ready to transfer

my painting to my carrier, the wind ripped it out of my

hands and sent it sailing! Thankfully it landed face up,

but it did get a small smear and some dirt on the way...

I fixed the smear and left the dirt alone so that I could just

wipe it off once the painting had dried.

Here are some pictures from our day...

This domestic turkey circled me the entire time I was working on

my second painting. He would posture, and then when he was

behind me he would start to drum his feathers. I worried

for a while...but then just realized he was only another art critic!

After having her easel blown over by the strong winds,

Sharon Benner used her 'studio' in her van.

She told me that this is how she paints in the winter -

it is quite a cozy set-up!

Mary Beth was able to find some shelter from the

wind by setting up near one of the barns.

Clare Klaum was also painting the view of the lane

and its row of beautifully colored trees.

Brownyn Hughes worked by the barn where the

brown cow with her calf were located.

Susan braved the winds out in the open, and had

some tape to help hold things steady!

Mary Beth's son Andrew really enjoyed this

adorable puppy. I have to say that it was the most

mellow Jack Russell terrier I have ever encountered,

and I would have loved to have taken him home with me...

although I am sure that my cat would NOT have approved...

Today I went back to Two Mile House (an historical site

owned by the Cumberland County Historical Society) to

finish a painting I started last week. We're in the middle

of a 'heat dome', so I left earlier than usual so that I could

finish up before the real heat started - it was already

95 degrees when I left the site around 11:00. Five of us

ladies from SVPAP painted there this morning - and my

hats off to everyone and their positive attitudes! We are

so fortunate that the property has lovely shade trees.
