While in the Marais District of Paris, I was instantly
drawn to this building with the light shining from
within.  It was so welcoming, even on that grey,
misty morning.  The exhibit of my work, and the watercolors
of friend and fellow artist Donna Berk Barlup opens
tomorrow at the Carlisle Arts Learning Center - 6:30 - 8:00pm!

'Lazy, Hazy Days of Summer'
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Lazy, Hazy Days of Summer'

Oil on Archival Linen Panel
9 x 12

I have not published many new paintings recently
because I have been working furiously to create
work for my French Show at the Carlisle Arts Learning Center
this May with fellow artist Donna Barlup.
This is a new painting I created as a result of an online class
I have been taking through the Tuscon Art Academy
with Gabor Zvagrik.  It's been an excellent class with an
exceptional teacher, and I LOVE that they give
online critiques of my work.

'Untitled - For Now'
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Untitled...For Now'
Oil on Archival Linen Panel
9 x 12

I was commissioned to paint this garden so that it
can be presented to the garden's owners as a surprise
holiday gift.  Every single moment of painting this was a
pleasure, and I will actually miss it when I ship it out
in the next week or so.  When I send it to the client,
it will be titled appropriately - but for now we are
keeping that bit of information under cover!

Love being part of surprises!!!

'Through the Trees'
Rockville Bridge, Harrisburg, PA
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

I absolutely love painting along water, and especially
the Susquehanna River here in Pennsylvania.  When I am
there I often take lots of photos as reference for future work.
This is one that I have been wanting to paint for over three years...
and is of a glimpse of my favorite Rockville Bridge
through the foliage of trees and wild plants.

I apologize for the glare - it is just off my easel.

An Original Oil Painting

I painted this in thanks to my nephew who
graciously allowed me to use his 'Hill Country' photos
as a source of reference for some paintings
of bluebonnets I am working on.  It was so much fun
to paint this old live oak - it had so much character!

'Bluebells In Spring'
An Original Oil Painting

Oil on Archival Linen Panel

My husband and I were on our way to visit some good
friends when I asked him to take a different path so we
could find a place that one of my students had recommended
as a potential painting spot.  We never found that
place, but we did find this gorgeous patch of bluebells
growing along the bank of the creek.  You never know what
you will find when you go the 'wrong' way!

Last Fall I wandered around the Gettysburg Battlefield
(Gettysburg National Military Park) and took some
photos while I enjoyed the beautiful day and the gorgeous
colors.  Hardly anyone else was there, and the whole
place had such a sense of peace.

As I have been posting my paintings from my
trip to Martha's Vineyard, each one takes me back
to the beautiful scenery on the island, the wonderful
colors of the land and the see, and the amazing time
I had painting with good friends.  It was an experience
I will remember and treasure forever.

What a surprise to find these lovely young doe
in the woods of the Catskill Mountains.
They stayed perfectly still as we
sat there and enjoyed their beauty.

The sun is getting low, and the color changes

'Abandoned Homestead'
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Abandoned Homestead'
© Claire Beadon Carnell
Oil on Linen Panel
9 x 12

I found this old abandoned homestead while
my husband and I were meandering down our local
country roads looking for some good places
to paint.  This farm sat back off the road,
and almost all of the buildings were painted
this brownish-red, and all had been deserted.
It made me sad to think that such a lovely farm
had been abandoned, but I was glad to see that
someone was still farming the land.

NAUSET LIGHT
An Original Plein Air
Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Nauset Light'
Oil Plein Air
Cape Cod National Seashore,
Eastham, Cape Cod, MA
9 x 12

Because of erosion that has been occurring along the shoreline
of Cape Cod, some of the light houses have been moved
further inland so that they are protected.  The sea was
to the right of this view of Nauset Light, but not
close enough to include in the painting.

I took a walk down to the beaches after finishing this painting
and saw a group of seals playing in the sparkling water!

BLUE AND WHITE II
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Blue and White II'
© Claire Beadon Carnell
Oil
9 x 12

A break from the Cape Cod Paintings!   I finished this painting
up in the studio today.  I inherited my love of dishes from
my mother (and her mother), so the desire to collect them
is pretty strong - especially the blue and white ones.
Several years ago I did a large painting of all blue and
white pottery (see below) - this one is smaller and
includes some flowers and grapes.

IN THE HEAT OF SUMMER
Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'In the Heat of Summer'
Oil on Linen Panel
9 x 12

I love to drive and take a road that I am
not familiar with in the hopes that I will find an
interesting place to paint.  The day I found this
farm, it was blistering hot, and yet those daylilies
in the foreground fields kept blooming profusely!

WAGON WHEEL BENCH
Beech Springs Farm
An Original Plein Air Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Wagon Wheel Bench'
Beech Springs Farm
Oil on Linen Panel
9 x 12

Some days just don't turn out the way you think
they will...
I was on my way  to deliver a painting yesterday morning
when I ran my car into a car that had stopped suddenly
in front.of me.  No one was hurt (the most important
thing), but my car got the worst of it.  After I had made
sure that everyone was ok, I suddenly realized that I had
all my plein air gear in the back.  Because many items
in the car slid forward on impact, I was very happy
to find that everything was safe and sound - especially
this plein air painting from Beech Springs Farm.

PETRA'S MAGICAL GARDEN
An Original Plein Air Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Petra's Magical Garden'
Oil on Linen Panel
9 x 12

Yesterday I painted in the beautiful gardens of my yoga
instructor's house.  I felt as though I had been dropped
into paradise...such gorgeous drifts of flowers, and
the Yellow Breeches close by.  While I painted, hummingbirds
came to feast on the bee balm, and Petra's chickens and one
of her cats came to visit me as I worked.  I almost expected
to see garden fairies flitting around the flowers...
After I was done painting, I went into her yoga studio
for my yoga class - what a great day!

Our plein air group, the Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters
has been invited to paint there this coming Monday,
I think they are going to like it...a LOT...

SUMMER AT THE ROSE FARM
An Original Plein Air Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Summer at the Rose Farm'
Gettysburg Festival Art Colony  2012
Oil
9 x 12

My final painting from the Gettysburg Festival Artist Colony
is of the historic Rose Farm on the Gettysburg National
Military Park.  I took the path up by the ruins of the
old stone barn, and then found a nicely shaded tree line.
I think four of us artists actually settled there (there was an
excellent view from every vantage point), and it
was nice to have company while we painted and avoided
the enormous groundhog holes!

SLYDER FARM OUTBUILDING
An Original Plein Air Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Slyder Farm Outbuilding'
Gettysburg Festival Art Colony  2012
Oil
9 x  12

I was so excited when I learned that the Gettysburg Festival Artist
Colony was going to be able to paint at the Slyder Farm.
It is more remote than the other historical farms, and
usually is accessed by foot or by horse.  On this morning
we had a wonderful workshop by Mark Brockman where
he showed us how to apply an underpainting of bright colors,
and then to lay paint on top of this.  I had so much fun,
and will be experimenting with this technique some more.

HISTORIC PEACE CHURCH
An Original Plein Air Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Historic Peace Church'
Built in 1798, Camp Hill PA
Plein Air
Oil on Linen Panel
9 x 12

Today was the first day of the second annual Camp Hill Plein Air Event.
I drove around to find a place to paint, and wound up
leaving the borough of Camp Hill and heading for the
historic Peace Church.  I drove down into the cemetery,
and found the perfect angle to catch the sunlight on the
building, and also that magnificent Red Maple.

This was done entirely on site.  I am glad I finished up
when I did because the grounds-keepers came in to
mow, and decided to mow right where I was painting!

Here's my set up - I was about 85% - 90% done at this point.
No one was mowing at this point :)

REDBUDS BY DEVIL'S DEN - REPOST
Gettysburg National Battlefield
An Original Plein Air Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Redbuds by Devil's Den'
Gettysburg National Battlefield
Oil on Linen Panel
9 x 12

I have had several requests that I post just the painting, so
here it is.  I pulled it out of my pochade box and signed it.
I have to say that seeing it made me smile as I remembered
the beautiful day of painting!

'Redbuds by Devil's Den'
Gettysburg National Battlefield
Oil on Linen Panel
9 x 12

Today was one of those perfect Spring days.  The
temperatures were in the high 50's, the air literally sparkled
with light, and the redbuds were in full bloom on the
Gettysburg Battlefield. Members from our plein air group, the
Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters, painted
on the battlefield this morning, and this is my painting
right before I packed up and headed home for the day.

I am so blessed to be able to follow my passion.
