France Series
'Spring in Giverny'
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

Oil on linen panel

Last year my daughter and I took one
of the items off of our bucket lists by making
a much-dreamed of trip to France.  We spent
most of our time in Paris, but also travelled
up through northern France visiting Giverny,
Rouen, Vernon, Les Andelys and Normandy.
This little landscape is from the gardens
of Claude Monet's home.  The Spring flowers
were brilliant in color, and this woman with her
red coat fit right in.

'Rose Farm Summer'
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

Oil on linen panel
8 x 10

This little painting started it's life en plein air,
but I wound up finally finishing it in the studio.
The Rose Farm is located on the Gettysburg
National Park, and I have always admired
its unusual turquoise shutters.  Several years ago,
those shutters were painted an ugly dark
green, but the following year they were back
to the original color.  I was extremely happy!

'Starry Pears'

Hmmm...the question here was how was I going
to fit my pear theme into one of my favorite
Post Impressionist paintings...then I noticed that
the bushes in the foreground of Vincent Van Gogh's
'The Starry Night' could become pear-like
without too much difficulty.

WOW.  I thought this would be soooo easy to to,
but it was NOT.  I wanted to get a very crisp line
at the top of the horizontal band, but that's
all but impossible using canvas!  Even smoothing out
the surface paint to create a sense of calm was
a challenge.  Hmmm...definitely some learning
going on here, and an appreciation for
this style of painting!

'Peace Pear'
Cubist
An Original Oil Painting

Day One

Day One

I am a little late with this first painting, but until
tonight I was not quite sure what direction I was going
to take.  I know I wanted to use larger brushes...but
then I came up with the idea to take a pear (or pears) and
using them as the subject for my thirty paintings,
I would paint each one of the paintings in a different styles.
I think this is going to be fun!

This first painting is based upon the cubist style.  One of
my favorite cubist artists is Piet Mondrian, so this is loosely
based upon his style.  I did some research, and learned
that Mondrian did not just do the very straight and perfect
geometric paintings I was used to.

In fact, I found a new favorite
'The Grey Tree'.

'The Visitor'
An Original Oil Painting

This painting is a result from a recent painting
excursion I took to Cape Cod this past September.
I am always fascinated by the patterning of the
marshes, and the way the water weaves
in and out and around the grasses.  What a
perfect place for an egret to visit!

'Susquehanna Passage' can be seen at the
Art & Soul Gallery in Lemoyne, PA.

'Susquehanna Passage'
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Susquehanna Passage'

Oil on linen panel
18 x 24

This is the view from the former offices of
Susquehanna Surgeons on Front Street in
Wormleysburg, PA.  I was with my husband
for the follow-up for some surgery he
had last September, and when I walked into
the waiting room, the view of the river
was breathtaking.  The late afternoon  light
colored the sky and river, and there was a touch
of Autumn starting to show in the foliage.  I got an awful
photograph of the scene through some really
bug-stained windows, but my visual memory
helped me paint this.

'A is for Apple'
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'A is for Apple'

Oil on linen panel

I have had some vintage wooden typefaces for
years.  Some are large (6 inches high), and
some are much smaller, and I have always loved
them and wanted to do something with them.
When I got my apples this fall, the idea to
incorporate them into a painting with the
typeface came into mind, and here is the result.

'Great Marshes to Cape Cod Trail'
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Great Marshes to Cape Cod Trail'
(Low Tide, Barnstable, MA)
© Claire Beadon Carnell
Oil
12 x 12

I had never been to Barnstable, MA before, so
my husband and I decided to head in that direction
when we were up there this past September.
We found a treasure...a nature preserve called
the Great Marshes to Cape Cod Trail.  It was a
very hot day (high 90's), but we hiked in about 2 miles and
saw the most incredible landscape.  Gigantic sand dunes
flanked us on the left, and gorgeous marshes
were on the right.  It immediately became one
of my favorite places in Cape Cod.

This painting will be on display at the
Mechanicsburg Art Center in the
Recent Paintings from the Cape exhibit.
The opening reception is December 14,
6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
