A Sticky Situation

'A Sticky Situation'
Oil 6 x 6

This is my submission for Alice Thompson's
Calypso Moon Artist Movement Challenge blog. The challenge
for April was to paint a food that we love to eat, but which we also know
isn't good for us...
I immediately thought of a nice, ooey-gooey sticky bun, running
over with sweet stickiness and loaded with lots of walnuts on top.
So much fun to paint...so hard to resist!

If you would like to see more of my work, please visit my
website. Thank you.

Hmmm, sure wish I could reach in and grab a piece of this. One of my favorites also. Very well painted. Hope you didn't let this go to waste after you painted it.

Yikes, Claire! This just wasn't nice of you to do to weaklings like me!! Oh to have that plate right here, right now! It looks sinfully divine! (How is that for irony? Dichotomy?)

this brought back a wonderful memory of a long ago vacation, we had sticky buns every morning! The walnuts are perfect, so much depth. and look at that fat drizzle with the highlight. Very nice!

The texture is very convincing!

I love those sticky buns, and you nailed this. I feel like I need to brush my teeth.

Your sticky buns have a plentiful amount of pecans - just like I like them. Our music teacher at one of the school's where I taught used to bring those good guys most Friday mornings for the lounge - great memories! Lovely painting!

Claire, I am aware my review was poor, regarding the composition, I hope you will forgive me; I was not used to do that, so I am trying again:
Your sweet takes about 2/3 of the canvas, in a central position, the plate's ridge representing the high horizon line. The empty space, occupied by the plate is especially situated on the left side and below, that brings back the eye, which was sliding along the drop ,(following the left going down diagonale) towards the center of the sticky bun.
The lines are curved,-plate,sweet's shape, nuts' pieces- giving a sensual and greedy feeling, and, of course an eager need to eat it!
-and excuse my English..

Beautiful work Claire. You have captured the essence of a sticky bun. Your offset positioning of the pastry is expert. With all of the darker colors in one corner, the whiteness of the plate in the opposite corner forces the eye to wander back up to the subject matter. I can't stop staring at that glop of sugary/cinnamon falling off the top and landing on the pristine white of the plate. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it! The angles of the walnuts is a nice comparison to the round bun and plate. Overall, a great painting, both in making my mouth water and in composition. Paula Reynolds

Claire, I have a critique for your posting. How can you say that this beauty is NOT good for you, when we all know good eating it is going to make us feel...ha! Lovely painting.

Hi Claire,
to look at your painting makes me hungry again even it would be not good for me too. Sweet, sticky, tasty, floating, you caught everything very nice.

Claire, your piece draws one in. The details became more visible after I made an adjustment to remove your canvas grain like the transparency of your sticky substance. Walnuts+Sugar= Perfection.
