SUSQUEHANNA BLUES
An Original Plein Air
Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Susquehanna Blues'
Plein Air
Oil
6 x 8

I never thought this painting was going to happen today.  It
was my first time to paint in Marysville along the
Susquehanna River, and I had the directions written down
to help me find my way.  Unfortunately, the directions did
not include the fact that a critical road was blocked due to
construction (and my GPS decided not to work).
 Miraculously, after back-tracking and
making a few u-turns, I was able to find the painting spot!

Because I had an appointment at 11:30, and
didn't get to start  painting until 10:00, that meant I had
only a little over an hour to paint and clean up and head
back down the road.  I think that worked to my advantage
with this little painting - I didn't have time to 'fuss', and I
am actually happy with the results.

Here are some of the other painters at work - everyone
was working intensely on their paintings.

MORNING GLOW
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Morning Glow'
Oil on Linen Panel
11 x 14

This red boat house is along the shoreline of
East Pond in Maine.  It is most beautiful as dawn is
breaking, and the rosy-gold  sunlight starts to illuminate
the landscape.

DUCKY DAY
An Original Plein Air
Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Ducky Day'
Plein Air
Oil on Panel
painted in Boiling Springs.  Some of the artists painted
the wonderful architecture that can be found in this
lovely little town, and some of us painted around the lake.
I found a shaded spot (that included a bench) that
looked across the lake to the raceway.

All types of ducks, Canadian geese and even a swan
drifted by as I worked on my painting...what a day!

GARDEN IN THE WOODS
An Original Plein Air
Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Garden in the Woods'
Plein Air
Oil on Linen Panel
12 x 9

Yesterday my good friend Pat Putz and I braved
the scorching heat and painted her beautiful
garden in the woods.  As we painted, I
enjoyed the sounds of her chickens and the
occasional breeze that drifted by. It was a
wonderful time shared with a dear friend!

Below is Pat working on her painting (with my
gear to her left).

IN THE HEAT OF SUMMER
Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'In the Heat of Summer'
Oil on Linen Panel
9 x 12

I love to drive and take a road that I am
not familiar with in the hopes that I will find an
interesting place to paint.  The day I found this
farm, it was blistering hot, and yet those daylilies
in the foreground fields kept blooming profusely!

A STROLL THROUGH SUMMER
An Original Plein Air Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'A Stroll Through Summer'
Plein Air
Bushman Farm, Gettysburg National Military Park
Oil on Linen Panel
12 x 16

I love this area behind the Bushman Farm on the
Gettysburg Battlefield.  As you walk down the path,
you get a glimpse of Big Round Top directly
in front of you.  As you progress further down
the path, you can see the Slyder Farm and
little Round Top to your left.  There is such
a variety of trees and other plant life, including those
cedars that look like teardrops on a stick!

COLOR ALONG THE YELLOW BREECHES
An Original Plein Air
Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Color Along the Yellow Breeches'
Oil on Linen Panel
12 x 9

We went back to paint at Petra Wirth's on Monday,
and even though the heat had diminished some of
the flowers, the colors were still breath-taking.
I loved the way the day lilies, bee balm and hostas in
bloom created a border of color along the Yellow Breeches.

LAZARUS
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Lazarus'
Oil on Stretched Canvas
24 x 20

I admittedly have never been a horse person.  However,
when I was painting on the Blue Hound Farm last
October, I saw this amazing old white horse in the barn
and I felt an instant connection to him.  There was something
very sensitive and special about this horse.  I actually went back
to the barn to see him again after the tour, and caught
him as he was walking back into the barn, with all of
that sunlight glowing around him.

Here is Lazarus's story:

Lazarus was given to the owners of the Blue Hound Farm
when he was in his late thirties, and he has lived with them
for the last nine years.  He is partially blind, has arthriitis and
some other health issues - none of which has daunted his
incredible spirit.  The owner of Blue Hound Farms,
Kristi Maher told me that whenever they get an older
rescue horse, Lazarus immediately takes on the role
of protector.  I knew he was special :)

ON THE EDGE
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'On the Edge'
Oil on Stretched Canvas
20 x 30

On this very hot Summer day, it was a perfect time
to work up in my studio (that has AC).  Lately I have
been working on some larger pieces,
and this is one of them. I have always had a
thing for hay bales, and then add to that the sky
with all of those puffy clouds - this was a joy to work on!

Thanks to Facebook friend Mark Smith for
the photo reference.
