SUPERSTAR
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

Day Thirty

'Superstar'

It's hard to believe this is the last day of the challenge.
I had all kinds of ideas for my last painting, and had
planned to paint from life as I had done with the previous
twenty nine paintings...but I was up in the studio and
found a black and white photo of my ten year old
grandson when he was a baby - looking like a superstar.

This has been a terrific challenge, and I have learned a lot.
Julie Oliver, one of the participating artist asked me if I
had met the goals I had set for myself at the beginning.
I definitely pushed myself to paint with more paint,
and have worked hard to be looser.  However, I have
also realized that I have to paint like myself.
Even when I am painting my last painting, there will
always be something new to learn - which is one of the
reasons I love painting so much!

All of my paintings for this Challenge will be done in a 6 x 6 format,
and my main goal while painting from life
is to LOOSEN UP and USE MORE PAINT...
something which will only benefit my work.

Can it really be Day 29 of the challenge?  Only one more to go!
This has been hectic and fun, but above everything
I have truly enjoyed seeing the amazing work that has
been produced by the participating artists.

I am really fond of this sugar shaker.  The lid is a
beautiful copper color and has holes in the domed top.
Thought I'd add a few sugar cubes just to add some
interest.  For some reason, when I was young I thought
you were very rich if you used sugar cubes...

SECKEL PEARS ON DEPRESSION GLASS

Day Twenty Eight

'Seckel Pears on Depression Glass'
Leslie Saeta's Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days Challenge
Day Twenty Eight
Oil on Panel

I recently was told by a friend that some green
depression class contains Uranium.   Apparently. when
you put the glass under a black light, it glows...
I know that in certain light this plate has a certain
neon green light around the edges...so I am wondering
if it may be throwing off some radioactivity!
Regardless, I know that something has seriously affected
my brain, or I wouldn't have chosen such a complex dish
to paint twenty eight days into the challenge!!!!

My cat Teensie loves to sit in this window and see
what's going on outside.  We even placed some bird feeders
close by so that she (and we) could watch the birds.
I can always tell when she is seeing something
that particularly interests her because that tip of her
tail curls up and starts to twitch!

TWENTY NINE DEGREES

Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days Challenge
Day Twenty Six

'Twenty Nine Degrees'
Leslie Saeta's Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days Challenge
Day Twenty Six

Oil on Panel
6 x 6

This is a view that is similar to the Challenge Twenty Five painting.
The difference is that it was painted four hours later, and
the temperature was twelve degrees higher.  I liked the way
just a tiny bit of sun brought some warmth into the painting.
I also felt that this painting was a bit looser with the brushwork.

Here's a comparison shot of the two paintings:

This is the view from my living room window this morning
around seven-thirty.  We got a nice little snow yesterday,
and when I got up this morning there were some light
flurries.  I like the way the front porch creates a

'Toy Horse'

Day Twenty Three

Oil on Panel

I picked up this hand-crafted horse years ago, and
he has lived the last thirteen years up in my studio
just waiting to be painted.   As one of my students
pointed out, 'he's a horse that can't decide whether he
is a horse or a cow' (because of those black spots)!
I'm rather partial to his stylized look...

SECKEL PEAR SHADOW
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell
Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days Challenge
Day Twenty Two

'Seckel Pear Shadow'
Leslie Saeta's Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days Challenge
Day Twenty Two

Oil on Panel
6 x 6

Of all the pears, I think I like the seckel pears best.
They are compact, and smaller than most other pears,
and I find their bronze-y green and red coloring
beautiful and fun to paint.  I wanted this one to have a
little drama, so I put it in my box that has limited
light.  My favorite part is the reflected light from
the wooden box that hits the under-belly of the pear...

Last September I got to go up to Cape Cod to paint

I am posting  Day 20 of the challenge a day
early because of the AFC Championship game between
the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots,
which starts in about an hour this evening.
I am guessing you won't have any trouble
figuring who I am cheering for...

'Shalt the New England Patriots win the

Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

GO PURPLE!

This Bartlett pear has been such a wonderful model,
but as lunch time approaches, this will become

the red of the blush from the pear was reflected in the tip
of my bird's beak paring knife...

I almost didn't post this piece, even though I painted it for
the challenge this past week.  All my other paintings
are still lifes with lots of color, where this is...well, it's
a landscape with shades of grey.  It's the view from the west
side of my studio - catching the dormer on the
front side of my house (and my favorite
pine tree in our yard).

A HINT OF SPRING
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'A Hint of Spring'
Oil on Panel
8 x 16

Two weeks ago I found this wonderful hyacinth
bulb starter, shich was supposed to have a blue hyacinth.
I took it home and checked it each day to see how
much it had grown.  As soon as the bloom started to
appear, I knew it was going to be pink - but I didn't
mind a bit!  I also realized that I was going to have
to find some time during the Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days
Challenge to paint this.  I hope that it brings a
Hint of Spring to you when you look at it.

This has been one of my favorite set-ups to
paint for this challenge.  I stopped at the grocery

one of these days I half expect the store security to

Does anyone recognize what this is?  I have two of
them, one a newer version that I actually use.
The one in this painting is a vintage Domino's

converted to a cute little bank.
I don't use this one because it has

My obsession with dishes continues...and I thought this
green Depression Glass compote would make
a wonderful vessel for the red cherries.  This was so
much fun to paint, but once again very difficult to
photograph - think my using Liquin is also adding a shine
that is adding to the problem.  It's always a learning process...

I am loving this challenge except for some frustration
in attempting to photograph the wet paintings because of
the glare I am getting.  I did another version of this
painting because I wanted to see what it would
look like with the bowl being larger,  I find that there
are things I like about both of them, so I am very
glad I painted both.  Here is a picture of them

Another treasure from the china closet, and a box
my son-in-law made when he was in high school
helped to get this newest challenge painting going.
Normally, I would paint to a certain point, and then I would
let it dry so I could glaze.  Since I am doing these one day
at a time, the real challenge was to create the same
effects while working wet on wet.

What an incredible learning experience!

When I first approached painting these metal measuring
cups, I wasn't sure where to begin.  Then I noticed the wonderful
abstract shapes, and the painting began to 'paint' itself!
Don't you love it when that happens?

One of the great benefits of doing this challenge is
getting to meet new artists.  I absolutely love the work of
fellow Pennsylvania artist Susan Williamson.

Day Six
Oil on Panel

This old piggy bank used to belong to my Grandfather,
and I always loved it.  It's missing the little stopper
on the belly that used to hold the money in...I
can only imagine how many pennies this
little ceramic piggy bank has saved over the years!

All of my paintings for this Challenge will be done in a 6 x 6 format,
and my main goal while painting from life
is to LOOSEN UP and USE MORE PAINT...
something which will only benefit my work.

KING OF THE MOUNTAIN
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell
Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days Challenge
Day Five

'King of the Mountain'
Leslie Saeta's Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days Challenge
Day Five
Oil on Panel
6 x 6
100.00/Free Shipping

When my grandkids were here on New Year's Day, they
got into the toy stash I keep for them and started
playing with the Megabloks.  It always seems as
though there's an immediate competition to see who
can build the tallest tower.  Because I am painting from
life, and also trying to paint things I have
never painted before, I thought these would be perfect.

All of my paintings for this Challenge will be done in a 6 x 6 format,
and my main goal while painting from life
is to LOOSEN UP and USE MORE PAINT...
something which will only benefit my work.
