mother handed me an old shoe box that had
the words 'Family Jewels' written on the lid.
When I opened it, I was quite surprised to find
some beautiful antique hand tools.
For years I thought about painting them, and
when one of my students offered to bring in some
more antique tools, this still life became a reality.
(Thank you Fred Baldwin!)
The amazing thing is that none of these tools
require electricity, and yet they still work as well
as they did the day they were made.
Most of these tools are at least one hundred
years old. Hope I am working that good when
I'm that age!

Very nice! I have a fondness for old tools myself. My paint box tools are all antiques. They are fun and make me happy to use them.
Wow, Claire, this is so great. I saw this painting in your photo shot of your studio and did not quite know what it was but it turned out fantastic. He should love it.
I'm really loving the addition of the Lennon like sunglasses! Shows that modern age can easily mix with those old tools and I find the idea that someone who would wear those glasses might also be using those tools. Wonderful!
Very interesting painting with lots of tools to look at. Seeing some of them, reminded me of a few that my Dad had which we still have. Reminiscing!
This looks like it took a lot of time and work!
A Great Painting idea!
Old tools are so great! They are made well and DO the job. I have a few, too. This painting is just perfect! Full of reminders of how well things used to be made..think of the work they have done. They are timeless. I agree, he will really enjoy it!
This painting is absolutely wonderful, Claire...a perfect still life with a story!!! My Dad brought a few tools back with him from Germany when he was there at war time....and he used them all the time...Also, I love the way you paint wood boxes..so realistic!!
Beautiful! I often think we are loosing the love of craft... of working with our hands. This painting touches that theme with grace and fondness.
Great painting, Claire! You tackled a complex composition and handled it perfectly!
I love the quotes you have at the top of your blog.
Many, Many thanks to all of you for your wonderful comments!
Oh My Goodness! I think this is my new favorite CBC painting! How tenderly you rendered these solid old tools and the wooden box. Great composition and wonderful palette! I love it!
Thank you, Rosemary!
