While exploring Martha's Vineyard this past
Summer, I found this partly open gate that
led to a path of Queen Anne's Lace, Black-Eyed
Susans and Purple Clover.  If only all of the gates
we had to pass through in this life were so inviting!

'Looking Down at Devil's Den'
An Original Oil Painting

When I first decided to paint this view of the
Devil's Den from the Little Round Top
on the Gettysburg Battlefield, I wanted
to portray the land, the beauty of this area
in south central Pennsylvania.
That is why there are no roads, no people, no tour
buses and no monuments.  Just the rolling hills and
all of those incredible boulders planted firmly in
the ground.  Those rocks and the land hold the true
memories and stories of the Battle at Gettysburg.

she knows how much I love to paint nests.

It was such a wonderful gift - thank you

I love going up to Kings Gap State Park (PA) any
time of the year, but especially in the Fall when the
leaves are changing color.  My daughter took some
photos when she was up there this past week, and
she very graciously allowed me to have one
to crop and paint to my heart's content.

A road that I travelled regularly was closed and
I found this wonderful country lane that I
had never travelled before. Each time I am on
it I am transported to a beautiful place with
amazing vistas.  This is part of a large farm, and
the fields of soybeans are starting to turn golden
as we enter into Fall.

As I have been posting my paintings from my

to the beautiful scenery on the island, the wonderful
colors of the land and the see, and the amazing time
I had painting with good friends.  It was an experience
I will remember and treasure forever.

I liked this view of Great Rock Bight Beach so much,
that I decided to paint it again in the afternoon
when the tide was low, and more of the rocks
in the water were visible.  I can really
understand why Monet painted his series of paintings.
Painting the same scene
during different times of the day and in varying
light/weather conditions creates a unique picture, as
well as a unique painting experience.

I just came back from a plein air painting jaunt to
Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts.  I was really looking
forward to painting the marshy areas, and was very
happy to find this marsh in Menemsha at low tide.
Locals who stopped by to talk to me while I was
painting said that this was the lowest they had
ever seen the tide in this area. Lucky me :)

I just came back from a plein air painting jaunt to
Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts.  The weather
was beautiful, the scenery was sublime...so many wonderful
things to paint.  This one I did on Friday.  The trail to
get there was long and steep, but what a treat it
was to see what was waiting for me at the end of
that trail!

I am not sure why, but every time I set about

I noticed this Civil War re-enactor when I was
attending Army Heritage Days at the
Army Heritage Museum in Carlisle, PA
this summer.  He looked like he had so much
on his mind, and it made me think of what
an incredible responsibility it would have to be
for any officer that must prepare to send their
soldiers into battle, and often death.

When I was participating in the Westfield, NY Plein Air Event
a couple of weeks ago, one day I painted on a beautiful
daylily farm with friends and fellow artists Jane Albin
and Roberta Staat.  I had happened to look up from my
own painting and saw Roberta talking to Jane while
Jane was painting.  I quickly grabbed my camera, and
before I even took the picture I knew
that I was going to paint this.

'Midsummer Pastoral'

This was such a pleasure to paint.  The scene
is from a rural area that is close to where we
have our cabin, and because the farms are run
largely by the Amish and Mennonite families, the
hay bales are actually baled with baling wire
instead of plastic.  This gives the bales so much
more character, and each one retains its
own 'personality'...perfect for this artist to paint.

On my very first day painting for the Westfield, NY
Plein Air Event, I went to Barcelona Harbor
and found this great little lighthouse.  The clouds
were in and out, but when they were out the light
that was striking the lighthouse was incredible.
Such a beautiful place, and I had such
an amazing time with the other artists who
were participating - I love my job!

I was commissioned to paint this scene as
a gift from a wife to her husband for their 20th wedding
anniversary.  It is of their favorite hideaway, and
included some of their favorite things to remind
them of the wonderful times they spend at
this beautiful lake.  Yesterday they came to the
studio to pick it up - my hope is that it will always
make them smile with fond memories when
they look at it!

This is the 'sister' painting to another one I have painted

On our way back from a day of painting in Cape Cod
last September, my husband and I decided to stop at this lovely park.
It was so quiet and peaceful, and the only sounds
we heard besides the rustle of the drying grasses in the gentle
breeze were the playful calls of some redwing blackbirds.

This  painting was done from the vantage point
of Confederate Avenue (before crossing
over the Emmitsburg Road), looking across the fields where
Pickett's Charge took place, and up to the Codori Farm
and Little Round Top.  Such a peaceful place...hard
to imagine what happened there over 150 years ago.

My paintings will be on display at the Alumni House

The weather has not been very co-operative for the
Gettysburg Festival Plein Air Event 2014.  It's been
grey and dreary, with some spots of rain.
I started out the event painting with my back to the
Eternal Light Peace Memorial because I love the
view of the fields.  A tiny little chipmunk kept me
company while I painted!

One of the most beautiful places I have ever been...
the Nature Preserve at Barnstable, Cape Cod, MA.
It was a blistering hot day, but my husband
and I decided to hike in.  The entire hike is six miles
one way, but we only got about 2.5 miles in
before we decided to head back.

Although it was HOT, it was a gorgeous day,
and the vistas were incredible.  The dunes were on one
side, and the marshlands were on the other.  We even
got to see baby Leatherback turtle tracks in the sand.

My husband I were driving around Gettysburg, PA
looking for a farm building I had painted, but
we just couldn't remember where it was.  On our journey
to find it, we came across a farm with Long Horn cattle.
This majestic bull was right along the side of the road,
and the only thing that separated him from me
was an electric fence.  When he started to make noises,
I realized I had better get out of there - but what
really made me move was when he started
to stamp his back hoof on the ground!

I love this road, because it takes me to one of
my favorite places on earth - our little cabin
in the woods.  When we travel up this road, and
pass the little white house on the left, that's the
last sign of civilization we see until we travel
back down the road again and head back home.
Yes, I am a hermit at heart...

A damp, dreary and cold day, but one that was made
so much more fun by painting with fellow

I loved the view of the creek and the trees...

I found this old abandoned homestead while
my husband and I were meandering down our local
country roads looking for some good places
to paint.  This farm sat back off the road,
and almost all of the buildings were painted
this brownish-red, and all had been deserted.
It made me sad to think that such a lovely farm
had been abandoned, but I was glad to see that
someone was still farming the land.

This time of year, especially after a long and harsh

yard to where I have planted a border of lilacs.
This is my favorite part of the yard, and I love
that I have lilac bushes that come from starts
that were from both my mother and my mother-in-law's
lilac bushes.  It's as if both of them are standing with
me beside those lilacs, basking
in the warm sunlight and breathing in that
luxurious lilac scent.

Last fall I had one of those moments when you

'Remembrance'
Gold Beach, Normandy, France
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Remembrance'
Gold Beach, Normandy, France
© Claire Beadon Carnell
Oil on stretched canvas
15 x 30

Some of the most memorable places I saw while in France
were the beaches of Normandy.  It reminded me so
much of the Civil War battlefields I have visited because
there was such a contrast of exquisite beauty with
the realization of the tragedy and heavy loss of life
that took place here during a war (World War II).

Both my father and my father-in-law were soldiers
in France during the war, and I painted this
in remembrance (and love) of them and all that they
did to preserve our freedoms.

This painting will be available at Brath and Hughes Fine Art, LLC - Gallery

My husband and I like to go on random drives,
arbitrarily selecting which way to turn.  Invariably,
we find the most amazing places and people
this way.  I have always found the backroads
to be the most interesting places to travel.

This painting is currently on exhibit in the
Carlisle Arts Learning Center
Annual Members Show

With all this Winter weather we have been having
lately, it is nice to turn to thoughts of Spring and Summer.
I grow bee balm in my flower gardens to bring the
bees in...look very closely and you might see a few!

'Walking through the Lavender'
An Original Oil Painting

SOLD

I grow patches of lavender in my garden because
of the color and the incredible scent.  It's
impossible to walk by the plants without
dragging your hands along the blossoms
so that the beautiful scent is let loose.
(My granddaughter Stephanie Grace posed
for this painting - thank you Stevie!)

'Song of Spring'
An Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Song of Spring'
© Claire Beadon Carnell
Oil on linen panel
14 x 11

This painting is came about from my longing
for Spring this year, and also a love for these
white and coral 'Salome' daffodils that I
grow in my front flower bed.  When I first planted
the bulbs for these, I could not wait until they
bloomed...and was so disappointed when they
did because they had a yellow center instead
of the beautiful coral color.  My disappointment
turned to happiness after a few days when I
saw that yellow center start to turn.  The
garden is always such a magical place!
